The existence of orangutans play an important role in the sustainability of the forest and the habitat for flora and fauna on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Forest conversion, illegal logging practices, and fires on both islands have contributed to the decline in the number of orangutans, amounting as much as 80% in the last 3 generations. According to International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN), there were only 13,846 Sumatran and 800 Tapanuli orangutans in 2016. These numbers bring them to the category of critically endangered species.
