Uniprep Junior College and UIC College Care for Orangutan Conservation

The existence of orangutans play an important role in the sustainability of the forest and the habitat for flora and fauna on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. Forest conversion, illegal logging practices, and fires on both islands have contributed to the decline in the number of orangutans, amounting as much as 80% in the last 3 generations. According to International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN), there were only 13,846 Sumatran and 800 Tapanuli orangutans in 2016. These numbers bring them to the category of critically endangered species.

To participate in the orangutan conservation movement, Uniprep Junior College (UJC) and UIC College students collaborated with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) in the "USG Education X BOSF Virtual Creative Showcase Green Movement Starts Now" activity. The virtual event was created to educate the students and public about the importance of the orangutans' existence in the ecosystem. UJC and UIC College students presented environmentally based business ideas, and exhibited their design and fashion products to audiences consisting of the UJC and UIC academic team, the BOSF team, as well as the public and media. There were so many creative ideas that have been raised, such as the making of comics, merchandise, and fashion products about the life of orangutans, as well as virtual fundraising through Kitabisa.com.  One of the  the messages is to not keep orangutans as pets, as a part of the whole conservation process, as well as asking for widespread public support. The main idea of the virtual event is to raise awareness and involve as many people as possible to join the conservation movement from children all the way to elderlies. The merchandise and fashion products were offered for sale to public and the proceeds are divided among the students and the BOS Foundation.

Through this event, many soft skills are taught and learned in conjunction with the academic learning outcomes. All of the activities mentioned were a part of Global Citizenship, Integrated Marketing Communications, Business Strategy, Product and Services Development class assignments to name a few.  Creativity and critical thinking skills, time management, leadership, as well as communication skills were also a part of the soft skills taught in the above event to ensure students develop both academically and in characters.  UJC and UIC College hopes through events such as this, students also develop empathies and awareness of issues around them, making them better problem solvers and great future leaders.
